Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity

By Dr. Peter Attia

This book won’t let me post an affiliate link because it’s outside of the program… but still gotta list it for y’all.

This is truly one of the few books that can quite literally change the readers healthy lifespan trajectory.
That’s not just my opinion either, read the presterigous forwards.

Here’s the rub that Attia tackles in a heroic fashion born of a culmination of his life long work in medicine and through this lens of his advanced mathematics background:

Health care as it stands currently is set up to produce treatments, drugs and care options intended only to treat the known failures of the human body as it manifest in disease - long past the point of health and vitality.

This results is a system that extends lifespan dramatically (thanks to critical care and modern pharmacopeia) after life QUALITY has already been dramatically compromised. He highlights that this is not just how it works sometimes …. this is how the system is built to work.

And that’s really a flippity flopping problem if you think about it with… well, logic.
Attia calls for a change in this mentality and

advocates an awareness of what keeps our bodies running better, for longer.

This read really lays the foundation to understand the following concepts:

  • How the medical system fails to prevent or even EXPLORE prevention of decline into disease

  • How the function of our metabolism defines our health / vs / disease status

  • How liquid Fructose may be one of the harshest strains on our metabolism since the widespread availability of refined sugar

  • How muscle actually relates to not just muscular fitness and mobility, but is also a foundational component of our entire metabolic feedback loop.

I recommend this book for anyone:

  • Interested in not loosing the last decade or more of their lives to disability and discomfort

  • Studying or working in physical fitness or sports

  • Studying or working in medicine

  • Suffering from diabetes/heart disease / really any chronic condition will benefit from the take away here
